History of Maa Gadhkalika Temple

Actually, Garhkalika temple has become Kalika because of being at the place named Garh. At the entrance of the temple, there is a statue of mother’s vehicle lion. The Kalika temple was renovated by Emperor Harsha in AD 606. It is believed that the great poet Kalidas Garh was a worshiper of Kalika Devi.

It is believed that once Kalidas was cutting the branch of the tree on which he was sitting. His wife Vidyotma reprimanded him on this incident, after which Kalidas worshiped Maa Gadkalika. He became so knowledgeable that he composed many epics and got the status of a great poet.
It is believed in relation to Kalidas that ever since he started worshiping in this temple, his brilliant personality started being formed. Mother Kalika is worshiped before the Kalidas ceremony held every year in Ujjain.
Gadkalika Mata is garlanded with Narmunds. Narmund and lemon garlands made of cloth are available in the temple premises itself. After the Navratri festival is over, lemons are distributed as Prasad from the temple on the day of Dussehra. It is believed that keeping this lemon in the house brings happiness and peace.
